Does it cost to do the Tongariro Crossing?
I know the crossing is a Great Walk so the Hut Fees are a little more expensive than the standard DOC Hut fees but other than that does it cost to walk the crossing itself?
its a day walk. you cant stay at kitetahi shelter.
The Northern Circuit is a Great Walk, with the Tongariro Alpine Crossing being a part of the Circuit from Mangatepopo Hut through to the bifurcation with the Oturere Track on the north side of Red Crater.
Have a read of the good info on the DOC website on how to prepare for the Crossing, what equipment/clothing to bring, what weather you may expect. It's an amazing part of the world but, being devoid of bush cover, if the weather turns bad there's no place to hide.
If you have the time to walk the Circuit it's well worth it. The Oturere Valley is stunning.
