Boots vs Shoes

My girlfriend and I will be visiting New Zealand this November. We are planning on doing a 3 day guided hike. I do not have the exact itienary, but I believe the hike is supposed to cover Siberia Valley/Lake Crucible area. Although I imagine this is dependent on the weather. Normally, when I hike over here (North Georgia, USA) I wear hiking shoes or trail running shoes. This is usually on a well-defined trail. I think we will probably be carrying between 20-30 lbs of gear. My question is would wearing my hiking shoes be a good idea or should I invest in a pair of hiking boots? Thanks in advance for your help.
