Elder Hut
Tararua Forest Park
A tidy, new 4-bunk hut on the exposed summit of Elder Peak. Features windows round 2 sides looking over the valley, a huge deck - all very good in nice weather. In driving, icy rain, it featured a view of clouds and the sound of lashing rain and humming guy-ropes. A fireplace was sorely missed. However, it is double glazed, and looks well insulated, so it should warm up in the end. Water is from the tank.
The new hut site is right on the track - older maps show the old biv location some distance south of the peak.
