Oronui Hut

Raukumara Forest Park

Oronui Hut. A standard 6-bunk hut in the eastern Raukumara Forest Park. 6 bunks, woodburner, tank water.

The hut is up on a terrace some 30m above the river, opposite the confluence. The start of the track was marked with small triangles.

The hut is used mainly by hunters, but occasional trampers pass through, generally on the Raukumara east-west crossing. Note that the only huts remaining on this crossing are Oronui and Mangakirikiri. The former Mangatutara and Te Kahika huts are no longer present and their former sites now lie in the midst of gravel river channels.

The east-west crossing is tough: scrubby, unmaintained tracks over the saddles, with little/no recent markings. River travel forms the majority of the route, with the Oronio gorge at the east end, and Motu river at the west requiring multiple deep crossings.

1-2 day scrubby crossing to the Raukokore (Te Kumi Flat tent camp) possible via head of Huitratariki.
