"New" Mt Brown hut
This hut replaces, but on a different site, the old Mt Brown hut which was removed by DOC about five years ago.
The new hut is the result of a community project lead by Eddie Newman and Julia Bradshaw. The old Lower Arahura hut was donated for resiting by DOC who also oversaw the new site selection & building plan modifications. Eddie & Julia mobilised volunteers, sponsors & donors to get the old hut demolished, the new hut built and to get the track re cut.
The hut was officialy opened on December 10 2010 at a virtual opening held at the Beach Front Hotel in Hokitika. Andrew Buglass (the founder of Permolat/Remote Huts) cut a piece of cruise tape draped across a projected image of the hut with a pair of pruners and declared the hut open. It is a great hut in a top spot!

The newly rerouted track start is from a new carpark about 50m upstream of the bridge on the TL of Geologists Creek. This is on the Lake Kaniere - Kokatahi Road which is named Dorothy Falls Road on some maps. The track markers begin upstream of the carpark and continue all the way to the hut. It is a 2 - 4 hour walk up to the hut on an unbenched track that is steep in places. This is a track that has just one small creek crossing so you are likely to be able to keep your feet dry! |
