Sentry Box Hut
Ruahine Forest Park
A typical Ruahine 4-bunker forestry hut 5 mins form the bushedge on the Mangleton Road. The short walk from the road is made up for by the epic drive required to get to the end of Mangleton Road - first heading 20km north to a suitable crossing of the Ohara before turning south again.
The hut sleeps 4 on metal bunks. The matresses are the old-style flammable foam ones - a sure indication that DoC don't plan on this hut being around for too long, or on putting too much money into it. There's an open fire, and custom ventilation courtesy of trigger-happy hunters. Water is from the river 20m away.

Getting there
|
5 mins from roadend across a paddock, over a style and along the river bank track. From the hut the steep climb to Pohatuhaha ridgeline starts: 800m and 1-2 hours. On reaching the ridgeline however it's a short 30 minute stroll left to Parks Peak Hut or 1.5-3 hours right to the derelict Aranga Hut, and on to the main range (Kylie Biv, Colenso, Ruahine Corner, etc) or No Mans. |
