Sutherlands Hut
Aorangi Forest Park
Sutherlands Hut is a 7 bunk hut on the 4wd Sutherlands Road in the Haurangi Forest Park. It sits in grassy clearings on the Turanganui River flats, in an area previously logged and now regenerating scrub / bush.
The hut is the earliest in the park, dating from 1951 - and the most substantial. There's a separate kitchen with a walk-through into the dining area and bunk room. No - I'm not taking the mickey - it really is a separate kitchen. A second bunk room is falling down and has no usable bunks remaining. There's an open fire, but the surrounding brickwork had fallen into the fire when I visited, though this vcould be easily remedied. The hut has a water tank, and inside sinks, but the piping between thw two was also broken at the time of my visit.
I've painted a very sad picture, but it's not all bad. This is a weather tight hut, and with a little TLC could be restored into fine condition.
