Sutherlands Hut
Aorangi Forest Park
Sutherlands Hut is a 7 bunk hut on the 4wd Sutherlands Road in the Haurangi Forest Park. It sits in grassy clearings on the Turanganui River flats, in an area previously logged and now regenerating scrub / bush.
The hut is the earliest in the park, dating from 1951 - and the most substantial. There's a separate kitchen with a walk-through into the dining area and bunk room. A second room is empty. Open fire, water tank, and sinks.
This is a weathertight hut, but does not get well looked after by users.
Easiest route into the hut from the west is via the river.
Tough ridgeline route from forks 1km downriver to Te Maunga summit and Tauanui Hut is possible with good navigational skills.
