The second hut to named Waiopehu Hut. Replaced in 2002 by http://www.tramper.co.nz/?1228 in 2002.

This hut was built to replace one that had been blown of the tops in the big storm of 1936. The outbreak of World War II held off the repair of the track and replacement of the hut until the late 1940s.

Up until the early 80's the hut boasted a dirt floor and platform bunk that held about 10. The hut tended to have rat and pussum problems and bullet holes in the roof were not uncommon.

The hut was closed for a while and re opened with much fanfare and a new floor in the early 1980s. But its unfortunate location amongst the trees meant that it was always damp.

Camping is still possible at the site, but there is no water or longdrop. The new hut is about 1.5 kms further up the track.

The hut was built and maintained by the Levin Waiopehu Tramping Club.
