Ohora Hut
Te Urewera
Ohora Hut (19 bunk, stove, firewood) is a large, multiple-roomed hut 500m from the confluence of the Ohora and Whakatane Rivers. It sits on grassy river terraces above the river.
Unfortunately, when I visited, the hut was covered in anti-DOC and anti-Pakeha graffiti and strewn with rubbish. Not a welcoming place despite its pleasent location.
Given its proximity, most trampers visiting are walking the of the Whakatane River track. However, tracks also lead up the Ohora valley where the Onepu Hut provides alternative accommodation. Tracks continue into the Tauranga Valley.
