Brodrick Hut

Brodrick Hut (sleeps 6, tank water, stove, firewood available) is a 1960's forestry hut at the base of the Brodrick Pass in the North Branch of the Huxley River. The hut is in good condition, and comfortably sleeps 6, though is not as warm as the forks hut 3.5km down river.
Brodrick Hut sits on a ridgeline at the bushedge, looking up at Mt Strauchan and the Brodrick Pass. The tussock flats of the upper North Branch, and the jagged peaks and glaciers around Mt Fraser are obscured by trees, but visible from just above the hut.
The hut is reached either up the Huxley valley or from Fraser Hut in the Landborough, via the 1600m Broderick Pass.

Getting there

Lake Ohau Roadend (Huxley Lodge): Hut->Forks Hut 3.5km (1.5-3hrs, riverbed / sidle track), -> Monument Hut 6km (1.5-3hrs riverbed / sidle track) -> Roadend 8km (2-3 hrs, 4wd track) Fraser Hut (Landsborough): Hut -> Fraser Hut 6.5km (6 DOC hours, via Brodrick Pass). Possible to continue down Landsborough to Haast Pass road, with several river crossings or tough sidles. A loop trip back over Elcho Pass is another option, as is continuing upriver to cross to the Douglas or Karangarua. |
