Midway Hut (Burnt Down as of 12/3/2016)
Te Urewera
This is a rustic hut half way up the Horomanga River. It is easily reached in 3-4 hours and makes a good destination for a return day trip or easy overnight trip up the river and back again.
(Was in the area hunting further upstream arrived Saturday at about 12pm near top end of the Horomanga when some Local guys from Galatea on Horses came up (12:30-1pm) asking if we knew about the Hut being burnt down, they said they had a mate who had been there up to Wednesday/Thursday and reckon it had been burnt down Friday night, mate walked down on a hunt and sure enough burnt to a crisp nothing there and the mongrels that did it cut trees down on their way out blocking sections of track which had to be moved. )
*** Note this hut has been semi rebuilt to a good bivy and could be used if needed as of May 2021 when I last visited. Has bunks but recommend taking a tent**
