Mudflats Hut
Mudflats Hut (6 bunks, matresses, tank water, stove, firewood available) lies in the mid-reaches of the Arahura Valley in Westland. It's a forestry-style hut, and well maintained. Don't be put off by the name - the flats are grassy, not muddy.
The hut is on the Arahura-Styx track, a 36km tramp (36km roadend-roadend, 53km including 10km along roads to complete the circuit) along a historic, well maintained, benched pack-horse track. The hut is 16km from the Arahura roadend, and as such a convenient 1st/last night's resting place.
Upstream of the hut, the main track forks, with the southern branch continuing over the Browning Pass into the Wiblerforce - an interesting track for those after a crossing of the alps on marked tracks.
An old marked route climbs the Campbell Range directly behind the hut, making it a good base to explore the tops or for a route-type crossing into the Taipo - for the more adventurous.
