Blue Duck Bivvy
A derelict B-49 NZ Forest Service hunters bivvy that was built in the late 1950's and is still on site. The window and door are off it and it has caved in somewhat from weight of snow. In an emergency it could still provide useful shelter for one person on the right hand side which has remained dry.
There is also a dry rock in the vicinity that used to by used by Internal Affairs & NZFS hunters prior to the construction of the bivvy.
The setting of this bivvy up in a tussock and rock basin is quite attractive.

Getting there
|
It is a 40 minute walk eastward down off Point 1618m on the Toaroha Range to reach this bivvy. It takes 1¾ - 2hrs to reach from Pinnacle Bivvy and little longer from Adventure Ridge Bivvy or Top Kokatahi Hut. Historically there was also access up from the Kokatahi River via Blue Duck Creek then a track to the tussock but the old track is overgrown. |
