Day 1. We intended to make this a 2-night trip (Kaituna>Packhorse>Waipuna Saddle>Hilltop) but the Packhorse was undergoing repairs and was closed so we went for the shorter route on this occasion. After relocating cars, we started walking from Kaituna Valley via Monument Track to the new Rod Donald Hut at Waipuna Saddle. Overnighted at this wonderful hut overlooking Western Valley and Little River. Day 2. Carried on from Waipuna Saddle to Hilltop and was favoured with splendid conditions and vistas. I've rated this track 4 out of 4 because the scenery and views were outstanding. The reserves are thriving and birdlife surprising. We saw three tomtits. Some stands of totora remain unfenced and cattle presence means the forest floor is bereft of any plant-life whatsoever. There are plans afoot to improve some sections of the track and build a couple of shelters.
