Island Forks Hut

dmolnar dmolnar 2 Jun 2014 Went in from Waitohu Rd end. We went up the Mick track which took about 2.5 hours to get to the summit of Mick. From Mick the ridge heads east-south-east through the scrub belt. The track is VERY slow. Took us about 2 hours to travel 1km. There is a cut track but the scrub is unrelenting. We tried head down the north-east heading spur past Pts. 872 and 620 however it was very difficult to judge where to turn off. We ended up heading northwards down into the western Waitewaewae and camped on a ledge above one of the tributaries. Took us about 8 hours. The track on the main ridge (before heading down) was ok after the scrub, a little overgrown. Not too sure where it goes, maybe southwards down to Arapito Creek. The next morning we followed the tributaries right down to the western Waitewaewae and followed it down to the eastern Waitewaewae confluence and found the hut. There was still a frost at 11:30am and was near freezing in the hut. I doubt it recieves much sun in winter. It took us approximately 2.5 hours to walk down to Waitewaewae Hut from the Biv. It's pretty straightfoward, however would be difficult if the river was up.
