Wharfedale Track is in good condition from the carpark through to Wharfedale Saddle. Between the saddle and Wharfedale Hut there is some sections of eroded track, can be narrow so watch kids closely. Also a bit of windfall through from here to the hut, and very wet/muddy/icy after a frost - all negotiable but don't expect it to be a nice flat track through this section. For the return trip we took what DOC now calls the Mt Oxford Route as an alternative - this track is in fantastic condition, nice and dry being north facing and just 1 tree down across the track which is easily hopped over. Enjoyed this more than the Wharfedale Track, although it is a solid climb from the hut to the ridgeline. |
