Mackenzie Hut

Honora Honora 24 Nov 2014 Some ?20 years ago, David Henson and a group of other volunteers from the CTC and the Pegasus Tramping Club organised with DoC to lift this hut up and place higher piles under it as it was (and still is) threatened by flooding from the adjacent MacKenzie Stream. Reports since then have mentioned in the hutbook river levels up to the second step. People store wood under the hut which contributes to dampness through two ways; firstly it reduces the ventilation under the hut and secondly, the wood becomes damp in flooding and holds moisture under the hut. This is evident in the unpleasant but faint stench emanating from the cupboard within the hut. DoC went in in Oct, 2014 and felled a tree to the north, enabling more light and warmth. Thanks, DoC. Alas, a massive and beautiful silver beech to the west also needs to be felled. It's only a matter of time until it drops that branch or itself over the hut - as they do.
