This was my first multi day hike and loved it! Amazing views from the top, the Okaka Lodge now has heating so thats a bonus. Be prepared for a bit of a climb on day one and heaps of boardwalks, day 2 starts off down hill and then leads onto the old tram tracks and you really need to watch the sleeper staples as the stick out and can make you trip if your not careful, day 3 is a little boring as you follow part of the track done on day 1 but the beach walk is still lovely. I highly recommend it!

Great variety of terrain and vegetation. Good choice for shoulder season tramping but as stated, Okaka Hut has no heating when doing it off-season. However the bunkrooms are well-insulated so body heat makes a difference. Probably warmer if a big group does it then. It has solar lighting in the kitchen and bunkrooms. Unfortunately we didn't go up to the limestone tors and tarns as it was clagged in but typically it cleared a couple of hours after we'd left. Got great views from Luncheon Rock. There are 2 lunch shelters so a reasonable trip to do in the rain. Port Craig hut is well-equipped and has a good woodstove. The mice were away when we stayed there. Currently the Percy Burn viaduct is closed but DoC have created a track that drops down into the burn and up again to rejoin the tramway. Quite nice to be down in the burn and look up through the canopy. A side trip can be done down the burn to the beach, and along a bit north to see a NZ furseal colony then take a wee hunter's track back to the tramway.

Okaka Hut has a lovely fireplace but alas, not in the off-season. The whole place is unheated in the off-season. There is usually no warden in the off-season either. Some people have done it in January and February and there was heating then when they did it but these months are not the off-season. The off-season starts in April. The website states there is no heating in the bunkrooms and no electricity or gas available in the kitchen, only solar lighting.

I used to work in this area and walked the Hump Ridge & South Coast long before it was developed into a "tourist" walk. Used to be lots of deer, pockets of wild pigs & heaps of seafood down there. Loved the place & would like to go back but I am not keen on km's of board walk or catered huts. Maybe it will be acceptable when I reach my seventies?
