Cass-Lagoon Saddle

Excellent loop track. We left a vehicle parked by the old Cass Rail Station, well off the road. We then carried on in the 2nd vehicle to the Bealey end to begin. We walked approx. 6hrs, with a quick stop to see the Mirror Tarn before reaching the Hamilton Hut for the night. There were two other groups staying in the Hut that night, both of those groups had walked from the opposite direction. Day 2 had a very steep start, but once on top of the Cass Saddle it was easy going, with an amazing view. The river at the end needed to be crossed multiple times, and was at times hard to determine which direction to go. We reached the vehicle after about 4-5hours. We definitely were pleased we went in this direction, and are looking forward to completing this track again.

Great scenery - very varied. We hitched a ride between the end and start points - Bob from Mountain House is no longer offering the transfer service. Very disappointed to discover a hunting party of 12 (including a baby) had used 4x4 access to "take over" Hamilton Hut. Worst hut night ever. Tack is also longer than stated. We clocked up 22km on the first day - It was around 2km from Cass Station to the track start which is included, and another 22km the second day including a visit to Mirror Lake and a light detour (less than 500m up the Mangos river) to the Cora Lynn car park.

Walkwire across Hamilton has been replaced with a new swingbridge. Large slip has formed a lake in the Cass River (as at Feb 2013) just upstream from where Long Valley Stream enters the Cass - track re-enters the bush about halfway up the slip & is marked by a large cairn on the slip

The recommended parking spot for cars is at the Cass Station as there is a security camera there. I left a bike at Cora Lynn to commute back to the start. It's a pleasant and straightforward ride.
