Just coming along to say it wasn't me! (Though I have been contemplating a solo trip through that country and had a couple of conversations with Yarmoss re same, weather has been so consistently poxy on the divide, I've stuck to cycling and picnics at the beach with the kids since Christmas) Hope it wasn't Busy Nick or Phil21? https://tramper.nz/?view=topic&messageid=61788#message61788
"The team had established the uninjured man was exhausted and had walked him down to the area where the helicopter had dropped them off so they could fly him out, Dittmer said. "This shows the value of having a beacon and using it. That's why people have beacons. They are an easy way to get help," he said. During the flight, the team assessed the man as able to get himself home, so he was dropped at his car parked at the entrance to the Routeburn Track. The man had done the right thing by activating the beacon and would not incur a bill, Dittmer confirmed." From the Stuff article
Lol "the five passes". Good to hear he was ok. It's also good to hear the weather is still crap up there, it's not just me then 🙂

Body of missing tramper found http://www.newstalkzb.co.nz/news/emergency/body-of-missing-tramper-found/ The body of a missing 65-year-old tramper has been found in Westland. The man was reported missing at midday yesterday after he didn't return from a one-day tramp in the Jackson Bay area, south Westland. Search and rescue staff found the man's body late this morning near a bluff in the coastal area between Smoothwater Bay and Stafford Bay. Sergeant Paul Watson says the man's next of kin have been told of his death and the matter has been referred to the coroner. Sergeant Watson says there appear to be no suspicious circumstances.
Shelley Crooks recovering well Monday, 6 February 2017 - 6:01pm Tasman Please attribute Sergeant Michel Bloom, Greymouth Police: Police have this afternoon spoken with Shelley Crooks who was located last night after being missing for approximately six weeks on the West Coast near Punakaiki. She is in hospital receiving medical treatment but is doing well. This is a remarkable story of survival. Ms Crooks set out to do a four day walk in the Mt Bovis area when she became disorientated and sustained a leg injury. She was well equipped and has extensive bush craft knowledge, enabling her to survive for six weeks as she attempted to slowly make her way out of the bush. Yesterday around 7pm a member of the public found her near one of the walking tracks. He immediately gave her food and water and sought help. Ms Crooks was then picked up by the West Coast Rescue Helicopter and flown to Greymouth Hospital. She wants to express her gratitude to the tramper who found her, and everyone involved in the search and rescue efforts to try and locate her. Police would also like to thank everyone who helped us in our efforts to try and find her over the past six weeks. We are ecstatic this has had a positive outcome. Ms Crooks and her family have requested privacy whilst she recovers in hospital. http://www.police.govt.nz/news/release/shelley-crooks-recovering-well

This is about the most fishy story I have ever read. She's from the bay of plenty mother of 4 young children and went missing for 6 weeks while doing a 4 day tramp on the west coast? There is much more to this story than an injured leg. She must have some issues going on I suspect.
She has a history of dropping off the radar. Is she claiming to have lived off the land for 6 weeks with an injured leg (that didn't heal enough in that time to let her walk out) yet was unable to draw attention to her location for SAR?
