Tramping in winter?
I'm looking into doing more winter tramps this season and was hoping for a bit of advice.
I've done quite a few day tramps in winter but nothing overnight and I've done lots of summer tramps (both back country and more popular paths) and have no qualms about tramping anywhere during the summer but basically want to know what I need to know about winter tramping to keep myself safe and comfortable. I've also done quite a bit of skiing and snowboarding but nothing off track.
I'm thinking of tramping in places like the Tararuas and Ruahines mostly. I guess my biggest worry is about encountering snow, I'm not planning on doing any climbing but will I need crampons etc?
I know all about layering and keeping warm and know how to look after myself pretty well in the wild but the winter aspect just means I want to get as much advice as possible.
Thanks in advance!

Having been a Club Captain for a while myself I know where you are coming from. Certainly if I was leading an 'Fit Trip' I'd expect the others to be skilled, equipped and actually fit. At the other end of the scale, if leading an 'Easy Trip" then just about anyone might turn up and you had to be prepared to deal with that.
But crucially while clubs expect members to be appropriately self-sufficient and capable, they also have a strong sense of responsibility for a safe outcome for ALL their trips. Many a Club Committee meeting sees time devoted to trip safety and the analysing of near-misses or events that have caused them concern. Truly the absolute last thing any club wants is for one of it's trips to make headlines for all the wrong reasons.
From experience the most common challenge encountered on club trips arises when one member for whatever reason suddenly decides they want to leave the group and go off to do their own thing. Often they've found themselves over their head, or not getting on with someone and they want to head out. Most clubs have pretty strict rules against this because it is a well known risk for disaster.
Trip leaders need to be pretty mature and assertive in this scenario, and if necessary they'll abort the entire trip to ensure everyone stays safe. Of course there are going to be unhappy people all round when this happens, and it's best avoided if everyone going on a trip recognises that if you are going on a group trip, you are entering into an informal mutual agreement to support the group whatever goes wrong. Just as you probably hope the group will support you no matter what happens to you.
Or put more simply as JETNZ says above .. to look out for each other.
Club trips are a group experience first and foremost; keeping this expectation in mind will greatly reduce the chances of disappointment. The entry price may well mean a bit more social conformity than you are accustomed to for a few days. But it usually turns out quite good value.
