South Island Midwinter Tramping--Suggestions?

Hi all! Some friends and I are planning our annual South Island midwinter trip, looking to go sometime mid-July. We're a mixed group, all keen trampers but some with more alpine experience than others. Anybody have recommendations (good trips and/or places to avoid) that we should add to our option list? We're going to draft three different trips in various regions, and make a last-minute commitment to whichever has the best conditions. Looking for a medium/medium-fit trip, 5-6 days. Cheers!

Cheers to all who gave feedback! As the only non-Kiwi who has not spent the past decade making trips into the Southern Alps, it would have been more difficult for me to suggest trips that are a bit off the beaten track. These ideas you've given seem excellent! We don't plan any days that are "supposed" to take longer than seven hours because I think we can all agree that in July it'll be more like 10-12 if not more. Suggestions that could be questionable with the forecast we face in July will be bookmarked for mellower seasons. When you're used to an entirely different set of mountains (American Rockies), input from those familiar with what are for you new surroundings is incredibly valuable. So thanks again! Happy tramping!
