Easter plans

Anybody heading out? I'm looking at my first overnight trip since becoming a father. OMG. Thinking maybe Avalanche Peak to Crow River in Arthur's Pass.

I walked up Mt Grey a couple of times when I was in the Army, one time doing a log carry. You honestly cannot complain about hills until you and 3 other people have to carry a telephone pole up one! One of the Sergeants in my unit was in love with the place. He would walk up there EVERY weekend we were in town. So of course that meant we got to enjoy it as well... You can walk to the summit of Mt Somers from several spots around it, the details escape me at the moment. Im keen to walk into one of the huts, summit the Mt and then finish by walking around the loop track.
Jealous isn't a word I use very often, so i'll say i'm very envious of all your NZ hiking/tramping plans. I'm back in the Peak District a week after easter in soggy/hailing/sunny/frosty/windy extremely unpredictable UK weather. Have a good Easter everyone.
Te Hapu sounds great. There are a couple of easy overnighters near there I've been wanting to do for awhile now: the Kahurangi Lighthouse Keeper's House, and the Kaituna Route. Drove around the Whanganui Inlet a couple years ago. Beautiful.
From pinnacle hut head west to the saddle. The usual route is straight up that north slope. Ive only ever done it downwards with snow, so not too sure what the surface is like. You obviously cant go direct from the hut as its real bluffy.
But head to pinnacles on a long weekend at your peril. Last time we did that there was 55 in/around/under the hut.
@bradley1 Bear in mind that Mt Oxford is far more challenging than Grey, Richardson & Thomas - over 1000m height gain from Coopers Creek to the summit, then quite a bit of up & downing if heading west across the tops & descending the ridge to View Hill. The Wharfedale Track doesn't actually go to Coopers Creek, but there is a linking track between View Hill & Coopers, takes a couple of hours. It's a long day out, but superb views from the summit. Enjoy!! - if I'm home I'll look for you on the upper slopes.
I have done the Wharfedale then back via Mt Oxford - the opposite way to what you're planning I think? Directly above Wharfedale Hut was a steep climb and coming down off Mt Oxford seemed to take forever - probably not helped by dodgy knees. I found it quite easy to climb Mt Somers from the saddle at the back. Then the nice view over the plains is more of a surprise. Camped near Maiden's Relief instead of Pinnacles Hut. Off to do Cass-Lagoon early tomorrow!
@Syncop8r We also did that trip same way as you. Overnighted at the hut, then up to Mt Oxford and back along the tops down to View Hill. Steep climb up yes, but the track was in good condition, seems its still on DOC's maintain list (spoke to the local rangers who confirmed that)...and like you, found that descent seemed to go on forever...was dark when we reached the car, but was June so to be expected!
There was 18 people staying at or around Larrikin hut Saturday night. In the previous two months barely anyone stayed there. Its a cool small hut with a open fire.
