This might be an appropriate thread to start just after Christmas. Perhaps you could share with us some item of tramping gear that you have been given by some well meaning person, or maybe bought yourself, and then never actually used.
Like the collapsable bowl I was given. Good, but it weighed about 500g
Also those camping solar shower things. (Maybe people are trying to tell me something). I have been given about three of them over the years but have never actually put one in my pack yet.
A lightweight camera tripod. I can just never bring myself to add it (but then my camera weighs over 2kg).
I love my wonderful wife, wickedly! But, bless her, she bought me some little snack carrying containers... They're quite bulky and a bit heavy. The actual fastening system looks very suspect too.
So, I may never use those. But, really, bless for buying them!!!
I actually own a Sierra Stove http://www.zzstove.com/ I have tried it around home and it will boil water as fast as any other stove. But it makes my pots all black and doesn't seem to go too well with damp wood. Consequently it has never been on a trip yet.
Virtually every gadget for tramping ever given to me such as pot grippers, star chart, gas lantern etc.
The hugely expensive and heavy but incredibly multi-functional Leatherman given by the wife one birthday, when all I wanted was a small pocket knife. Even now I have pangs of guilt about not taking it on tramps.
Indeed it is. You are welcome to borrow it and try it out if you wish... if I can find it.
Candle Lantern : Was only ever going to be practical when used by a group gathered around one spot and then everyone has their own personal light anyway. Too hard on the eyes to read by and when in the centre of a table it was necessary to place a bottle ,eg nalgene, between it and me to soften the light.
Two gifts. I also have a candle lamp [unused]. 2x heavier than headlamp. And a dog's folding water bowl.[I have never owned a dog].
