"Nor do I want to pay through the nose for servings that might be a "generous serving" for a mouse but which are life threatening for a hungry tramper" I would say that that is critical. Well known fact that the 1 serve back country dehy meals arent much good after a full days tramp. Gotta spring for the 2 serve ones.
If I take a 1 serve I'll make up a bowl of mashed spud and peas as an entree...
There are very few BC main meal flavours I can eat on their own, they're just too salty/vinegary. Cooking up rice, or mashed spud like Hutchk suggested, not only balances out the flavour but can spread a 2 serve between the 3 of us easily. More of a flavouring sachet methinks I tried 2 of their Gourmet range earlier in the year and wasn't impressed at all! More money for a fancy packet
I'd rather just dehyrate and seal up my own. Then I know exactly what I'm getting, for a fraction of the price. Convenience, however, is a different matter, as these meals take AGES, especially when making a lot of them. Still, I know what I like, and it's great knowing there'll be no surprises in whatever I open up.
