I live near Melbourne's beach and mountains (10 minues to an hour+ drive). Please do not hesitate to contact me if you & your lady make a visit to Melb, Australia. Two years ago, I had a visitor from Brisbane whom I had met in Lamington NP, Qld. Regarding my 2009-10 walk list, I look for the route guide on topomap for the routes: (1) West Matakitaki River (Bobs Hut) +4kms along the river then to Ada Pass Hut via Three Tarn Pass (please check out Lewis 1:50 000), (2) Dragons Teeth (not sure of south to north or in adverse specially the route from Lonely Lake to Adelaide Tarn and high or low route via Drunken Sailor, Anatoki Peak and Anatoki River. Thanks in advance.
Hi dztramping, was great to meet macca, we were well looked after, thanks macca. I can send you info on Dragons Teeth if interested we came through on the low route from Adelaide Tarn to Lonely Lake, where we were stuck for 3 nights waiting out a snow storm.
Yes, please do so. At this stage, my plan is to tramp from north to south with the start at Boulder Lake. Think I will contact macca because of my gear (mainly maps & info for other tramps), transport and food drop. After the Dragons Teeth, Leslie-Karamea-Wangapeka Track is in my head. Also stuck 3 nights in a hut on North Island early last year. Will load extra food. Many thanks.
As discussed that I will walk the Dragons Teeth from north to south and plan to complete it in Cobb Valley where I will need to make a phone call for food drop, I am of interest in phone reception in that area. Thanks in advance.
From what I recall there is no phone reception in the Cobb. I think you will have to get quite a long way along the road to Takaka before you get anything.
Having missed the station wagon I owned on North Island tramping trip early last year and I am interested to know how NZ Post works specially working dates, hours and the cost of sending a parcel.
Could either Dztramping or kokako please forward on any Dragon's Teeth track info. Thanks. PS Found this useful http://www.giscover.com/tours/tour/display/1343
Enclosed is what I replied to Kokako "Thanks Linda, I have also had quite a lot of information on Dragon’s Teeth tramp including 1. memory map 1:50 000 Topo Map South Island, 2. Kahurangi Parkmap 2004, 3. Tramping guide books (Classic Tramping by Shaun Barnett providing info on the route in reverse), and 4. Trip notes from tramping club websites. Having looked at digital topo maps and the Parkmap, there is no marked route for dates: 1. Boulder Lake to Adelaide Tarn, 2. Adelaide Tarn to Anatoki Peak or River 3. Anatoki Peak or River to Lonely Lake via Drunken Sailors 4. Lonely Lake to Fenella Hut However, based on tramping club trip reports via photos, the route can be followed via markers, foot pads and/or some sections maybe cairned…. At present, I am also interested in a visit to Diamond Lake and Iron Hill via Lockett Range after leaving Fenella Hut. Hope you know exactly what I am after – the marked route on topo map/s, track notes and the info needed for planning. Also plan to walk 1000 Acre Plateau. Will carry maps, a gps, a compass, a mobile phone and a 406 Distress Beacon. Regards, Dzung"
Glad you found my notes on the GISCover website useful. At the moment I am trying to get a trip together to complete the Dragon's Teeth trip in September. A bit wintery I know but we will give it a go. If we do this I will post full notes and a proper GPS track on this site before your planned trip in 2010 There was an earlier thread on the Dragon's Teeth at http://www.tramper.co.nz/?view=topic&id=97 Also if you want to see all of my photos from 2006, go to http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v424/pmcke/Tramping%20Trips/Dragons%20Teeth%20April%202006/?start=all
Thanks for pics and hopefully more detail pmcke. Found the other thread after I posted - doh.
