Chilly weather hike

Beautiful days but chilly nights - some of the bush tracks have got pretty wet and muddy in the Waitakeres but still some tracks worth doing!

White hunter mentioned the "coons" ....so added a bit of a yarn to spice up the thread. Perhaps its a reminder of just how information can be so quickly distributed in the modern age. I had my gear packed to head off Tuesday for a couple of days in the Tarrys , but got rung to go to work , so the walk didnt happen . Right in the middle of a great patch of weather!
I recall a few (probably more than a few)years ago a couple of young Maori lasses were trapping up Te Haroto way and they got caught in a heavy snowfall. From memory they survived ,but the remarkable thing was they were barefoot. Breed them tough up there.
Old time Maori could knock up a pair of sandals (parawae) in 20 minutes and for scree travel, they'd add an extra layer. It took Charlie Douglas's mate, Bill the Maori, most of the day to make his pair though.
