Tama Lakes to Tongariro Crossing

Hi all. I thought it was about time that I join in rather than just reading from the sidelines. I remember a while back reading about a route the Tama lakes north to Tongariro skirting the western edge of Ngauruhoe. I just wanted to see if anyone here has done it and if they had any advice. It looks fairly straight forward from the map. I'm personally pretty experience with off track/backcountry tramping but not in that sort of terrain. Spent most of my tramping days in the upper North Island. Thanks in advance.
Hi Sam, I did this trip many years ago. You are quite right it is straightforward - as walking on lava fields can be, anyway. I seem to remember camping near the south branch of Mangatapopo Stream for water and looking down on Mangatapopo Hut from there. We were doing a weekend loop trip from Waihohonu/Tama Lakes/Oturere. This was back in the good old days when there were bugger all people about.
Great! I’m planning to just follow the crossing track back to Whakapapa. Figure the loop will be a longish day.
