Large tracts of New Zealand are set aside as national "Stewardship Land." This is not low value land, but rather land that has yet to be classified. This is a work in progress and the focus of an ongoing campaign by the FMC. Land is also managed as regional or local parks or water conservation reserves.

Up until 2014, Te Urewera was a national park. It has since been delisted as part of an historic land settlement. However, public access has been maintained.
