Cobb valley track slip status?

  • Hi, Does anyone know the current status of the Cobb valley track? Apparently there has been a significant slip near the Cobb tent camp. Track is not closed but I was wondering the degree of difficulty crossing the slip. Thanks...
  • Ah crap, I was planning to go there in January. Did you try contacting DOC?
  • All we know is what is on DOC's website page for the Cobb Valley Track which says there is a large slip which is difficult to cross. We were hoping to hear from someone who has been on the track recently to confirm how bad it is.
  • Ah yeah I was just talking about actually talking to DOC staff, they often have more details about the situation when you call them. For future reference, DOC website says "15 November 2016: Large slip on the Cobb Valley Track, Kahurangi National Park There is a large slip on the Cobb Valley Track. The slip is ten minutes downstream from the Cobb tent camp, between Chaffey and Fenella Huts. The slip is difficult to cross because of deep mud and debris. The track is not recommended for inexperienced trampers or small children." http://www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/places-to-go/nelson-tasman/places/kahurangi-national-park/cobb-valley/
  • Just give DOC Takaka a call - they will know.
  • Update from Doc : Slip is on the Peel Range side. Extends all the way to river, but did not dam the river. Slip about 1km below Tent Camp. Is basically a debris fan that valley hikers need to cross. Was initially very soft and sinky, but has now settled and we have withdrawn the INV.
  • Thanks! What is INV?
  • No problem - I'm tramping there in Feb so needed to follow it up. INV : that's what came in the email - refers to the alert. maybe invigilation or investigatory or important notice (the v is a typo) or .....
  • this is what my brother had to say: We walked over the slip debris (100m) on the way to the tent camp. No problems, just a little mud in a few spots. I don't know what caused it, heavy rain perhaps in combination with the tremor maybe. There might have been a natural dam breach up the hillside, but no tarn is shown on the map. Otherwise, I would say there is no sign of earthquake damage, and maybe the earthquake had nothing to do with this slip either, or maybe it did! The reservoir is the highest I've ever seen it, and there is plenty of water in the creeks and Cobb River. A reflection of the wet season.
  • Great thanks, I'll defo go there next month then :) Last time the track was under up to a metre of water at times, so so wet, had to turn back half way, decided it was not wise to continue. Hopefully this time will be better!
