North Canterbury earthquake

  • Hi I hope everybody is ok after the sequence of shakes around Hanmer Springs and Kaikoura. SH1 north and south of Kaikoura is closed due to slips. Here in Christchurch we experienced the quake as a very long rolling motion.
  • It was a wild ride in Wellington. Were ok up in Newlands but not everyone quite as lucky
  • Yep it was scary here in the Hutt Valley. Had to evacuate with the tsunami siren going off.
  • Just when you thought it was safe eh...? Thought it underneath us in Amberley. My second thought Alpine Fault because it went on for 2 minutes, had none of the hallmark 'action' of the CHCH quakes. Sounds like a complex seismic event which is still being analysed.
  • Kayakers missing on the Clarence. That new lake up there looks pretty unstable too. https://www.tvnz.co.nz/one-news/new-zealand/search-underway-kayakers-following-clarence-river-breach
  • ah. The Clarence lake is no more. Pity: looked worth a tramp to visit!

  • Kayakers now accounted for
  • my only worry will be an eruption...
  • Too far away from the volcanoes unless the south island starts subducting again.

  • The highlight for me was discovering that my wife and I did not fit under the bed together! It was fun/scary trying though! lol
