I'm looking at purchasing a new billy and wondered if any of you folk had any experience with those pots that have 'built in windshields and internal fins' on the base to 'enhance thermal performance'. I'm wondering about a generic type to use with my old stove, not investing in the quickboil type systems. [I have a decades old gas stove Kovea, I think]
Do they make a difference in fuel consumption etc?
Oh and can you use them on an open fire or alcohol stoves?
I havent used one myself but have read a few reviews mostly rosy.
Yes they do improve boil times and reduce fuel use. On some pots this is quite significant. The trade off though is that because the fins tend to quench the flame a little there can be quite an increase in carbon monoxide production. Dont use them in confined spaces.
Not sure how they would go on a fire
Agreed geeves.
Yes, they make a difference in fuel consumption. It is reduced to some extent.
Not sure about the open fire stuff though.
Cheer for the replies.
I can't find anything about how compatible they are with woodfires. They can be used with alcohol stoves seemingly, but hexamine tablets coat the fins and so reduce efficiency.
I might end up buying two billys one with fins and one without as I use a variety of heat sources.
I would expect they work equally well on fires to a normal billy but once again though soot on the fins could be an issue and there is a chance of melting the fins.
