  • We were lucky enough to get an excerpt in the Press last weekend about the rescue from Tutuko of Lisa Auer and another guide whose name does not come to me. Once again, Hannibal Hayes to the rescue at the instigation and involvement of other guides (Paul Rogers etc.). I've been thinking all week about how they could have prevented the trench foot that stopped their retreat but couldn't envisage what one could do as it was bloody freezing and wet up there.
  • some people talk about vapour barrier liners VBL's as opposed to visible panty lines.... VBL socks or even plastic bags over socks to stop moisture getting through to the feet.

  • My feet unfortunately pour out moisture of their own. I envisage this combined with the cold, this would be a hazard over a period of several days.
  • There's some sort of drops that Andrew Skurka uses. Completely forgot about that until just now. Damn it. Was going to get some, but there's no way they'd arrive in time now. :(
  • @Kreig: Tell me more if this is about trench foot and not just tinea. Trench foot is an injury of the skin, blood vessels, and nerves of the feet due to prolonged exposure to cold and wet, common among soldiers serving in trenches. Those poor British buggas deployed in the Falklands War were disabled by it.
  • No, not tinea. Ex-mil medic, remember. ;) Skurka hiked across Alaska in winter in trail shoes. His feet were badly waterlogged every day. They looked hideous. But he had a little routine he went through every time he set up camp, and by morning they were good as gold.
  • start another thread on tinea, dont hijack this one thanks
  • talk about foot problems in this thread
  • It's almost time for me to rip all of my toenails out. It's something I do before every big undertaking. Yes, it hurts. Especially the big nails. But once they're all out, they don't grow back for months. Scalpel and a pair of pliers does the trick. Oh, and a bunch of tissues. ;)
  • Was never about tinea. I just replied to a convo you and Honora were already having. But ok, no probs. There's a new SAR book? Cool beans.
