Example online retailers: Bivouac sells online at http://www.bivouac.co.nz/gear/more-gear/maps.html , MapWorld at http://www.mapworld.co.nz/nztopo.html . I think there's at least one other but I can't find it. Meanwhile the more official home of the Topo50 map series is at Land Information New Zealand: http://www.linz.govt.nz/land/maps/linz-topographic-maps/topo50-maps
I'd also agree with @Kreig that if you weren't already, it's also a really good idea to aim to learn to navigate and know where you are for the most part without a GPS (though a GPS is clearly a useful tool). It wasn't really what you asked, though.

Have you considered just getting an app for your phone?
Much much cheaper.
Google 'handheld GPS vs smartphone' you will see theres pros and cons to each...
Atlogis do a good app. New Zealand maps I believe it is called. 10 bucks. Just download the map area you need before you head out and it works well as gps. Available on android. Dunno about ios.
I use it and can say it works well, and Im happy with it. The maps it uses are the nz topo 250 and topo 50s
I'm actually waiting for my new phone to arrive. It's only a moto G2 but would it suit the task?
