Bushcraft?

  • Literally just a learning thing. I've recently found that simply being in the bush really helps with my stress issues. Not to mention I'm fat, getting old and starting to get aches I can't ignore. I've seen a lot of good ideas and I'd really like to implement some in my own attempt. All natural, nothing foreign added, arm-thick totara is just ideal for the job I reckon, and there's a lot of nice thin strong vines that like to creep up the punga. Fern thatch for the roof. Just big enough for a cot. I'd also like to try my hand at knapping see if I could make some functioning tools, just lose myself in the wild for a while and get back to basics you know? I really value solitude. *Edit* You're right about the Kunaka and Beech, looks like great wood, I'd much rather prefer to know I'm not going to make any lasting impact. Definitely prefer bush over pine, although the pine would make for great possum bow hunting. I actually want to try processing my own possum for dinner sometime. I also prefer the safety of fire near a stream, bush just feels a bit more wet :P

  • Makes nice satay. Cook as-per goat. Tb won't get you once it's cooked. More likely to catch it skinning / gutting. And anyway - Bovine Tb is pretty hard for humans to catch.

  • I read on the NRC website that currently up here the possum is TB free. But yes I'd thoroughly cook it and I've no idea if I like it, but I won't know until I try, same with rabbit. I believe they do carry a lot of fat on them, but hey maybe I could learn to make tallow and some candles? who knows lol
  • Gawd. Wouldn't fancy being in a hut with possum tallow candles burning. Now that _would_ really smell!
  • I also recently saw a guy making pots from the clay at the stream and firing them in his campfire, looks quite fun
  • I actually want to try processing my own possum for dinner sometime. Best possom recipie is granitic possom. Put the possom in the pot with 2 potato sized rounded rocks Boil vigorously for a week eat the rocks
  • Yeah I'm with you Geeves. Want to do that too. But I wanna make damn sure I know the difference between a healthy set of possum lungs, and a TB-riddled set! :/
  • tb is nothing an extra long course of amoxilin cant fix (that is unless its penicillin resistant) As a teenage we caught a few possoms Didnt eat any though. TB is a quite fragile bacteria It wont survive proper cooking not that thats going to make possom any more palatable.
  • TB is nothing a course of 6 months of isoniazid and rifampicin and 2 months of ethambutol and pyrazinamide, and some pyridoxine to reduce the risk of nerve damage as a side effect of the isoniazid, can't fix (unfortunately ALL TB is penicillin resistant). Unless it is "drug resistant TB". Or if it is cavitary, or in your lymph nodes, in which case you might need 9 months treatment. But I don't think eating properly cooked NZ possum will give you TB.
  • Well thats enlightening stuff isn't it! Considering the likes of osprey and federated farmers and co seem to use the Tb thing to push the 1080 agenda pretty well :)
