  • Rightio. As the title says, I've got three days off. I live in Greymouth. I want to do a 3 day tramp (even though Iit's State of Origin tomorrow night). Short and sweet; what's your suggestion, and why? Heading off in the morning, so make it quick! :D

  • Definitely looking more than a little pooky. Tomorrow's good, and part of Sat, all Sunday. http://metvuw.com/forecast/forecast.php?type=rain&region=nzsi&noofdays=5
  • Oh, but I WANT to test my mettle (and gear) against the elements. Basically, snow would be great! My Kahtoola microspikes and weird-as Alpico foldable ice axe have arrived. :)
  • You won't have to go far for snow… :-) Maybe Kirwans Hut? No unbridged rivers but quite a long walk in. http://nelsontrampingclub.org.nz/sites/default/files/kirwans_hut.jpg

  • microspikes arent for powder they are for ice... to get high up to the ice you'll be trapped by all the powder below when it falls. it not going to disappear in a hurry.
  • Then I'll happily slog through powder. Til I order the particular snowshoes I want. :) That hut looks great with all that snow! Don't mind a long slog. Where isit, and how far the tramp?
  • And I don't mind gnarly weather. In fact, I love it! Last week when I went up my beloved Croessus they (later that day) issued a tornado warning, and on the way ddown it was navigating waterfalls and a big slip. :)
  • talking up to a metre of snow
  • With imminent snow, take extra food for the 'snowed in' scenario. :-) Not sure I'd venture up there with that forecast but it seems accessible in snowy conditions judging by the photo. Could just translate as rain for that area. Kirwans Track is near Reefton…in the Victoria Forest Park. http://www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/places-to-go/west-coast/places/victoria-forest-park/things-to-do/tracks/kirwans-track-and-waitahu-valley/
