Flares....

  • Yep. Well aware you can't fly with flares. Actually, that brings me to my next question; does anyone know if they do bag checks/scans on the Interislander?

  • I don't know if you are being serious about searches, being an unhelpful prick, or just having a laugh. I'll take it as the latter. If someone has a serious answer for me, I'd love to hear it.
  • Seem to be limited to carriage in vehicle only (no walk-on). https://www.interislander.co.nz/Files/PDFs/Dangerous%20Goods%20Limits%20V2%20May%202015.pdf Still not sure why you want any if you have an EPIRB ... even after reading the thread.
  • Drive-on vehicles, kept in vehicle on vehicle deck - Limited to certain small arm cartridges, hand flares, smoke flares, distress flares and signal cartridges only with a limit of 50kg gross weight including packaging. Not permitted for walk on. Please ring 0800 660 670 if carrying any of this class of product. https://www.interislander.co.nz/Files/PDFs/Dangerous%20Goods%20Limits%20V2%20May%202015.pdf Doesn't say there AREN'T cavity searches, but you probably wouldn't joke to them about it. :)
  • Carry a roll of magnesium ribbon with you instead. About as much use as a flair in the bush, ignitable with your camp stove, weighs 25g and you can carry 1kg of it on the Inter Islander according to Maritime NZ :)
  • the best laughs I've had for a long time!
  • As both Westland & Madpom have suggested. Mightn't mean much if people aren't searching for you. Even within a Club group setting, 'You hike your own hike'. You take what you're prepared to carry, or not. I'm happy enough with my flouro vest, emergency bivvy, & whistle. Hell, I even take the latest 'Listener' in a plastic zip-lock most multi-nighters, so I'll have something to read while I'm waiting. If I don't need it for glossy toilet paper, could probably use the TV scheduling as fire starter ?.

  • Out of curiosity, how much does a flare weigh anyway?
  • Dont think glossy paper would do either duty very well. A smoke flair could be quite useful but a night flair wouldnt do much better that a decent led torch. When it turns to custard you can pretty much guarantee a howling northerly is about to start. Of course the helcopter pilots know its always a southerly that strikes so will be looking north of the flair
  • I could ignite the toilet paper, but I know which I don't want to run out of first ! Comet hand held orange smoke flare (60sec burn) weighs 200g. RFD NZ Christchurch stocks this kind of stuff. http://www.rfd.co.nz/products/marine-products/pyrotechnics.aspx http://www.comet-marine.com/products/non-solas/orange-handsmoke
