Winter Tramping

  • Hello everybody, We are a young adventurous couple from Canada. We both have done several expedition mostly in summer/spring/ autumn. We are very athletic. Looking for challenge and beautiful landscapes! Anything from a day trip to a week long. We will be travelling during the winter season from June 17th to August 4th. We would like some advice on which are the best available hikes during this season. We will be arriving at Auckland and departing from Christchurch. So anything in between would interest us but we are willing to do a detour if it’s really worth it. We are not really looking for guided tours. We would love to do the trips with other trampers who may have more experience in the area. What would you recommend us? Cheers Isabelle
  • hi Isabelle - going tramping here during the deepest winter months can be fantastic and can be dangerously unpleasant. And sometimes you'll see all conditions in one day. You're planning to be here for reasonable block of time. From Auckland to Christchurch comfortably covers 80% of the tramping opportunities, no where in the country is much of a detour especially if you travelling in your own vehicle. So meaningful recommendations are going to depend on what you want to experience and what the weather is like on the day .... hughvannoorden at gmail.com regards Hugh
