Have you considered adding a dedicated 'gear review' section (similar to the add hut/track/photo function, with a template for pros/cons, star ratings etc)? I Realise the Gear Talk forum sort of covers this, but a searchable, categorised section would be more user friendly.
There's a real lack of impartial gear review sites in NZ (plenty overseas, but I'm more interested in how stuff performs here), and I for one would really value the opinion of anyone dedicated enough to seek out this site and post a review.
Easy to suggest these things when I don't have to do any of the actual work :-)

I think the search function would need to be robust and specific to gear only otherwise we will pull up every reference to 'tent' that has been made on the site.

I like the idea of a gear review. Often, there are lots of opinions and info on gear, but they are buried in different threads.
Would be nice to have them in a central place.
Legal issues are definitely a factor. However, that's already the case with the forums. Basically any reviews that were not fair and reasonable would be deleted. I may consider excluding reviews from search indexing and perhaps even from access to non-members.
At the moment I need to review priorities anyway.
