  • To me, the fact that it's a "race" is another distinguishing factor, because being a race introduces new incentives that encourage participants to possibly take risks they'd not otherwise take, either to do better than someone else or to keep up with people already taking those risks. Not to suggest that races should be a no-go area, or completely without risk, but I think the aspect of competition introduces a new defining metric. I do have a friend who co-organises long distance endurance cycling events. He's noted to me multiple times that they intentionally call them "rides" and not "races", even if people have their own informal competitions. Apparently that minor semantic adjustment makes a big difference for everyone's travel insurance.
