Fiordland Traverse West of Lake Te Anau

  • Perhaps there have been previous threads on this. Done by Mike Abbott (solo) in 1988-1989. http://www.nzgeographic.co.nz/images/archives/issue004/html5/index.html?page=24 He mentions there it was previously done by John Cocks and Rhys Buckingham in 1975. Did Graeme Dingle and Jill Tremain go west of Lake Te Anau in 1972? Must get a copy of Two Against the Alps from the library. Has anyone else made it through there since? Links to accounts and or route maps of any later traverses (if they exist) appreciated. Mainly just out of curiosity, it looks like a hell of a trip, I think if I had the time available for it I'd use it for a different long trip.

  • @Honora will be able tell you all about it. http://tramping.typepad.com/tramping_report/2006/03/54_days_into_fi.html Also: http://www.tristanriley.co.nz/blog/archives/72 http://tramper.nz/?view=topic&id=298 http://honora-in-the-hills.blogspot.co.nz/
  • "Did Graeme Dingle and Jill Tremain go west of Lake Te Anau in 1972? Must get a copy of Two Against the Alps from the library." I'm pretty sure they started at Homer Huts. That entire trip was inspiring. A decade later a mate and I gave it a go and only got half-way. Some of the distances they covered in single days (short winter ones at that) were pretty remarkable for the time.
  • Thanks for the links. Sorry, I hadn't realised Honora was part of that trip that ended in tragedy in 1995.
  • Tristan Riley almost makes it seem easy. 19 days right through in running shoes. Interesting to see a lightweight approach being made to work in some of the most continuously difficult country you could find anywhere. Food for thought, breaking it into a section from Manapouri to Lake Hankinson, aiming for about 10 - 12 days and then coming back a season later to complete might be a possibility.
