Labour weekend trips

  • Yep - hills absolutely empty ... can we have a RWC every long weekend please?
  • Met another couple near shoulder knob and they said they were with one other couple at maungahuka for the night and then that was it other than us on the main range. For a still crystal clear tararua long weekend that's nuts. We were blessed. Plus I still watched the abs lol.
  • huts full up for a change at great barrier. hardly any day walkers around..
  • Well, my plans for a couple of day trips got scrapped by the missus with a to-do list. I still managed to get a couple laps of the Karori Sanctuary fence in. Doing those walks in the early morning and early evening made the birdlife amazing with a huge number of birds coming and going over the fenceline. Made me realise how silent most of the NZ bush is. Feeling a bit green of you guys up on the main range of the Tarrys with the weekend weather we had.
  • I spent the weekend up at Craigieburn with my 2yo daughter. No significant walking, but great to get out of town at least. She enjoyed visiting Cave Stream and Castle Hill. Solo camping with a toddler is pretty hard work and I'm not sure about doing that again. Lots of bikers around but barely anybody camping there. Still some pockets of snow on the Craigieburn tops. Great time of year to get up there I think.
  • Spent the weekend in the Ruahines doing the Longview - Howletts - Sawtooth Ridge - Daphne circuit. Thought the wind might turn us back off Sawtooth but it eased off enough. Thoroughly enjoyed the trip! Only saw a couple of other small parties. Even the traffic back to Auckland was better than normal for a long weekend.
  • @Briar Good effort driving to Kashmir Road End from Auckland. We went into Cascade Hut in the Kaimanawa's. First visit there for me. Nice walk with plenty of bird-life. Saw one other tramper and had hut to ourselves.
  • Spent the weekend at Whakakapapaiti and Mangaturuturu Huts on Ruapehu, mint weather and saw no-one.Some others of my party did the Tongariro Crossing and said there were thousands!!Surprise, surprise!!
