Avoiding the snow

  • A trip in the bush ie to Lake Daniels, right now, would be snow free right?
  • Forecast for 'Lake Daniells' as I type - Heavy rain becomes snow showers on Wednesday afternoon 19/8/15. Followed by 4 or 5 days where temperature maxes at 4-5 deg C. Forecast could easily change by tomorrow as weather patterns morph. How snowy it is there at the moment, I don't know. (edited - 'Daniells' has 2 L's)

  • Unlikely to be new snow, maybe remnants from last weekend. The hut is at 550m, forecast says sleet lowering to 700m, freezing level 1000m. Met Service don't have a Lewis Pass forecast but Canterbury High Country is a good indication... http://www.metservice.com/mountain/canterbury-high-country
  • In the interests of accuracy - it's actually Lake Daniell (2 l's, NO s) Most people make that mistake. :)
  • It's a hard area to read weatherwise. For the Lewis Pass region I often look at both Canterbury High Country and Nelson Lakes, then decide which is most applicable depending on the prevailing weather pattern/direction.
