Arthurs Pass Loops

1–10 of 13

  • Hi, does anyone have any suggestions for a (preferably) two night trip that can be done as a loop in the Arthurs Pass area?
  • huts or tents? how hard or easy? how many hours walk a day?
  • We'll take tents. Easy to Medium (haven't done any proper tramping in a while). I haven't really thought about how many hours per day, probably 5-6.
  • Lots of em..try start at andrews shelter-casey hut-upper poulter-binser saddle-back to andrews. Thats a comfy 2 nighter with lots of camping options. Or up the waimak to waikmak falls area and back. Edwards-hawdon is a beaut but not a loop sadly. Maybe up the mingha to goat pass then lake mavis and back, that can extend to 2 nights if you camp at the lake. Whatever you choose enjoy it! Cant beat AP for scenery!(om maybe Mt Aspiring NP but they are both classic SI)
  • Thanks, looks like we will be doing Casey-Binser - although I thought it was a one-nighter? I'll do Cass-Lagoon and Edwards-Hawdon in the near future. Although they aren't closed loops, I would prefer them to there-and-back trips. Arthur's Pass area has been on my doorstep for years, about time I ventured in there. :)
  • moderate one nighter, easy two nighter. If the walk in to casey goes well, consider using your middle day for a day trip to lake minchin (for a cold swim), then the last day from casey down and out over binser saddle. Take insect repellant and sunscreen. :-)
  • Another comfortable 2 nighter mixing camping with huts would be head up the Mingha and camp at Lake Mavis, then cross over to the Edwards valley and down the valley to Edwards Hut (good camping near the hut too), then out down the Edwards to finish. This one is a round trip so no transport hassles.
  • We did the Casey-Binser but the other direction. It was good to get the drag up the Poulter out of the way on the first day. Mice everywhere there though. Oh and my insect repellant didn't seem to work. :-( I also need to seriously reassess the weight of my pack. :-/
  • The Casey - Poulter - Binser route will do that to you, its a hell of a lot further than you think, especially if you are carrying too much. Both days are 6-7 hour tramps!
  • Thanks, that makes me feel better. My brother told me it was 5-6 hours each day! Eyeing up Cass-Lagoon now...
