North Wilkin track

  • Am planning a trip in mid November to Mt Aspiring NP to base ourselves at Top Forks hut for a few days to explore the area. We're keen to have a day trip to the Waterfall Face and back (wont be attempting it...too risky for me!).I've read a few reports of the track between Top Forks and there having slips and windfall. Has anyone been that way recently(given thats its winter the answer is probably no) and can comment on the track conditions? Cheers
  • I went up the South Wilkin in March, and I too was worried by the DoC warnings about the track to the Waterfall face, but it was fine. There is an unstable, eroded gully to cross not long before you reach the upper, flat-ish section of the South Wilkin, but it's not too bad; just not the sort of place to linger.
  • that was march, there is often still snow around in november.
  • Was up there in Feb 2013 and was as described above. Went up Waterfall face, not nearly as bad as made out. Went carefully and was fine, it is steep but never felt exposed. The upper basin to rabbit Pass is beautiful. The descent into the East Matukituki was shorter but technically more difficult.
