Great Walks in NZ

  • I am a new tramper here. I got no idea about great walks but would love to get into exploring these. I am only getting info about different tracks via reading blogs (http://www.look4travel.com ) / watching videos (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qdhwMEJbaRY ). I have no idea which track should be taken by a beginner like me. I am planning to travel with a friend. Any suggestion?

  • If it's a Great Walk then experience barely matters. Look for the ones closest to you, or easiest to reach, first.
  • Check out this website, it is the official DOC site for the great walks. http://www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/tracks-and-walks/great-walks/ Some things to know: All must be booked in season (October-April) Bookings have opened already, places are short so get in NOW Most are in the South Island of the country, mainly around Fiordland in the SW corner of the Island My personal favourite so far has been the Heaphey Track, but everyone has their own fav. All are fairly easy (Milford/Kepler/Routeburn most difficult (hills to climb), the easiest would be the Abel Tasman Coastal track.
