@Gaiters, off-season fitness

  • @Gaiters. From my Tararuas forecast, if it ain't wet, it's going to be cold the next 10 days !. You got 24hr gyms on weekly subs. or cheap City Council ones up your way ?. A bit of treadmill on a slope or step-ups in sets of 100 might be useful ?. I tried stationary bike spin classes for a Winter & found they didn't do diddy first hike in Spring.
  • I absolutely hate gyms haha. I do the te whiti firebreak five days a week. Twenty times a month. Two hundred fifty times a year. Chances are if youve done it youll have passed me. im the guy with the border collie say Hi lol. I aim to do 100km of hill walking a month with a minimum of 10000m vertical. Plus atleast on challenging overnight tramp a month. I have a little gym in my shed with a treadmill. heavy bag and weights. I usually bike to work. It seemed so tough reaching my targets last month. It really sucks hiking up the firebreak in the dark in a freezing nor wester. Plus all iwanna do is sit by the heating and eat. Last year was not this wet. Its not heavy rain really but its cold constant drizzle and strong cold winds. I prefer steep outdoor climbing to any other form of activity. its just what I enjoy. The te whiti firebreak has helped make world classathletes like Nick Willis. Jonathan Wyatt and Melissa Moon. Itsa fantastic asset to the hutt valley. Plus at the top is a karearea which never fails to blow me away.
