Forum spam

  • Well this is clearly becoming a problem. At present, there is nobody here to remove these posts if I leave town (I'm heading to Dunedin today) or leave the country (I was in Australia last week). I am in favour of having a "flag abuse" button which would remove the post for moderation. There are potential issues here -- should just one vote remove the post or would it need several votes? Hmm. Another alternative would be to grant regular users the ability to moderate content themselves. Thoughts?
  • Not sure what measures are best, especially not being computer savvy, but certainly think something should be done to keep the hawkers off the site. Whatever you think is best is fine with me.
  • There is already an email confirmation step and a "captcha" step (which stops automated bots signing up). We can't keep hawkers off, but we can clamp down on them as quickly as possible...somehow.
  • Spam is problem on all forums. The 'flag abuse' method should work. I suggest making it 2-3 votes just incase someone clicks it by mistake. In saying that User moderators are also highly effective at keeping spam under control.
  • I know I'm probably the only person in the entire universe that doesn't understand all this techno babble, but as long as it works, go for it, whatever "it" may be, so long as we keep the door to door (or should that be Forum to Forum) salesmen out!
  • i have to agree with normclimb, whatever works just go for it!, i too am hopeless when it comes to computer tech talk but whatever helps to keep the pesky buggers out is good by me!
  • I see that now the spammers are creating spam content. I have left the content up while I build a mechanism to manage it, but I will be deleting it in a few minutes. What a waste of time....
