Favourite Track North Island

  • Going to beat the spam and get some ideas about the NI.
  • On the tops in the Kaimanawas in summer
  • plus 1 for Kaimanawa tops in summer - rivers arn't too bad either
  • Takes a lot to beat the Whirinaki from Central Whirinaki to Upper Te Hoe hut through Rogers hut and out from there.Amazing forest and views.
  • Thanks, have to make some plans for the North island, all our tramps have been in the South.
  • Peter, if you are comming over from Aus then you must go to Tongariro National Park. The volcanic landscape there is unique. I suggest the around Mt Ruapehu track. It is relatively uncrowded and there are good huts. I suppose the Tongariro Crossing is a must but it gets very crowded. The Kaimanawas, Ruahines, Tararuas are probably the most like the South Island in the North island with a variety of tops, bush and river travel. The Whirinaki, mentioned by John, is uniquly North island bush country. Good huts and good tracks. It borders on the great bush wilderness of the Ureweras. Also the Pureora Forest Park is another area with good bush country.
  • Further to what pmcke has said, the Southern Crossing in the Tararuas is a classic(though can be unforgiving in bad weather),and i highly recommend doing the Howletts,Daphne,Longview huts circuit in the Ruahines, its awesome country.
  • i agree with john...except from howletts head north along the sawtooth range. then down black ridge to tarn biv. awesome stuff
